Guidance on how to maintain your brake and gear cables.

Gear and brake cables on the Brompton are low friction but, with time, the linings can wear; deterioration in braking performance may be particularly noticeable. Fitting new cables cures this and is well worth doing regularly as part of your servicing routine.

Gear cables can also wear down,  leading to poor selection of gears and, in the case of hub gears, risk of damage; as a pre-emptive measure, we, therefore, recommend replacing the gear cables at the same time as the brake cables.

The cable routing and terminations are critical. For outer cables, the length and ferrule diameter should be identical to that of the cable originally fitted. For the front brake cable, the outer must be in two parts of the correct length, so that the cable gathering ring occupies the right position in the cable system.

Brompton strongly recommends using cables supplied by Brompton; if you have to use cables from another source, specify low friction cables (PTFE coated inner cable, lined outer cable) and make sure that lengths are correct to the nearest 2mm.

We recommend that your cables be serviced and/or replaced by an accredited dealer if you don't feel confident to do it yourself as these components are safety critical..
