Washington DC City Guide

Bring your Brompton to the nation’s capital

Washington DC is more than what you remember from your eighth-grade school trip. Although the District is more widely known for being the central hub of US politics, the city also offers interesting things to do outside of government.

Thanks to specialized bike lanes and scenic cycling trails, Brompton riders will have no trouble finding unique and fun restaurants, boutiques, activities and more. We rounded up some of our favorite must-visit places next time you’re in DC – or if you live there yourself!

The best part? Each location on our list allows you to bring your folded Brompton inside.

Where to go for food and drink

Maketto

A shopping spree isn’t complete without a satisfying meal. Maketto boasts both in one place: a Cambodian and Taiwanese eatery along with a cool streetwear boutique. There’s a mix of small, medium, and large plates for any appetite. From Pork Steamed Bao to Drunken Shrimp Fried Rice, you and your next group ride will love splitting a few different choices.

Chacho

Chacho’s namesake house liquor is inspired by “aguardiente,” a type of spirit from South America. Featuring a spicy blend of jalapeño, you can expect Chacho’s menu of refreshing cocktails to kick up the heat. It’s an intimate place to bring a date after an evening spin around the District, or to celebrate a birthday ride with friends.

Metrobar

Need a nightcap to conclude your evening ride? Metrobar in Georgetown focuses on bringing people together through sensational craft cocktails featuring local spirits, beer and wine. A popular outdoor venue — especially in warmer seasons — you can be a part of the good vibes with friends and family all year long, rain or shine. Don’t forget to check out their food truck schedule online for the best local fare.

Arepa Zone

Arepas are a delicious classic in Venezuelan cuisine. Think of light maize patties with whatever savory filling of meats and veggies you can imagine inside. Arepa Zone has perfected the art of making a mouthwatering arepa in the District. Come hungry to one of their locations to rev up your ride (and your appetite).

Byrdland Records

There’s nothing like kicking back at home and relaxing with music after a long bike ride. From one of DC’s beloved music venues, Byrdland Records can help you find the next album on vinyl you’ll play on repeat. Collectors will love the breadth of genres they have available, especially their curated selection of hard-to-find records. You can even purchase store merch, including a Byrdland slip mat for your record player.

Shop Made in DC

DC souvenirs don’t have to be “touristy.” Support a local artist or brand instead. Shop Made in DC houses goods and products from small businesses around the District. We especially loved their wallets from Bicycle Trash made from recycled tires.

Second Story Books

Bibliophiles, take a break on your ride for rare and out-of-print titles at Second Story Books. Folded Bromptons are allowed inside at the front of the store (and should be clean of dirt and debris too). Inside, booklovers will appreciate thumbing through shelves and shelves of works you won’t find anywhere else.

Where to go for activities

Baila Thursdays Salsa Social

When’s the last time you went out dancing? Make it a new hobby with Baila DC. Every other Thursday, Baila DC provides a salsa dancing social at La Cosecha. Beginners are welcome, and you can grab a quick bite to eat afterward at one of Union Market District’s restaurants.
