For 25 years, León Hamui has played a central role in spreading Brompton Bicycle across Mexico City (CDMX). He retires this year after 23 years of being the official distributor of Brompton in Mexico.

Rarely seen without his Purple Haze Brompton – an archive color from 2005 – León lives by example, choosing cycling as his main mode of transportation.

“I don’t use a car at all. I get around on my Brompton,” León said in a recent catch-up with the Brompton team. “I go from home to the shop, to the office, then I ride to get lunch, then to meetings, and then I ride back home.”

León and Brompton, the perfect match.

A funny-looking display of folded Bromptons first caught León’s eye to the brand. It was the year 2000, and he was representing Mexico City bicycle advocacy group, the Bicitekas, at the Velo-city Conference in Scotland.

“I arrived at the event in Edinburgh and found the cloakroom,” León recalled. "There were no coats, no bags – just a row of folded Bromptons, all neatly lined up.”

He hadn’t seen anything like it before.

“I said to myself, ‘What is this?’ I was astonished – as I think most people are – when I saw how everyone unfolded those little boxes that suddenly turned into bicycles.”

From there, León’s journey with Brompton began, from being a casual enthusiast to eventually becoming the official brand distributor in Mexico.

Conveniently located in the Colonia Cuauhtémoc neighborhood, his Brompton showroom invites curious riders from all over the world to experience the freedom of a bike ride in Mexico City.

Mexico City: A growing travel destination for cyclists.

León celebrates a long history of cycling activism in Mexico City.

He and the Bicitekas lobbied and advocated for the creation of a bike path from Mexico City to Cuernavaca – transforming a former railway route into a 60 km roundtrip trail for cyclists.

Today, León explores the vast neighborhoods of Mexico City on two wheels, encouraging others to join him too. He’s the go-to resource for anyone looking to tour CDMX by bike.

“You can ride across pretty much the entire city. It’s not a problem getting around,” Leon said. “The city center is really interesting, and Avenida Reforma is also beautiful.”

“I love going to the Bosque de Chapultepec,” he added. “I get to cycle through it often, and it always feels like a reward.”

One aspect that makes cycling culture in Mexico City unique is the Sunday ride on Paseo de la Reforma, the Paseo Ciclista. Every Sunday, the city closes major roads to cars, so tens of thousands of residents can freely ride bikes or skate past iconic spots such as the Angel of Independence.

Life after retirement

No surprise here – León plans to continue his lifelong passion for cycling after retirement.

“My Brompton is like my wife,” he joked. “It comes with me wherever I go, and I take it wherever I go.”

He’s also planning a sailboat excursion throughout Europe, on top of taking painting and ceramics classes back in Mexico City.

For León, riding his bike unlocks a world of discovery around him. No adventure seems impossible from behind the handlebars. Just an endless series of different turns, all offering a unique memory in return.

“One day, there was this horrible hailstorm in the Bosque de Chapultepec, near Calzada Gandhi. I sheltered under some huge leaves and tossed the Brompton under a tree to keep it and myself from getting wet.”

“After the storm passed, everything looked like it was covered in ice,” León remembered. “It gave me a real sense of peace. I think that’s one of the nicest moments I’ve had with my Brompton.”

Here’s to more moments of peace for León with his bike at his side, in gratitude for the 25 years he has put in for Brompton.
